Living another lie

I have to get a referral to see Dr. Roda or I won't get reimbursed (wish I'd know that last year), so I went to Student Health Services to make an appointment to waste 20 minutes with a G.P.

"What's the appointment for?" asked the perfectly nice receptionist.

"I need a referral," I said.

"What kind of referral?"

I wanted to say, "None of your business -- and not the business of the 14 students waiting on line behind me, either." Instead, I said, "Endocrinologist." It doesn't have the stigmatic sting of "Psychiatrist."

  1. you should complain to one of her superiors. she doesn't have any right to ask you who you need to be referred to.

  2. It's also a violation of HIPPA. Hospitals have signs in every elevator now, telling staff not to discuss patients while there are 'civilians' around. Sheesh.

And don't feel bad about lying. This kind of lie doesn't count. I decided :)

  3. Agreed. You also could have said, "specialist", and she would hopefully have gotten the point.

The whole referral thing is ridiculous, especially for mental health services. But don't get me started.

  4. Yeah, it sounds like a major HIPAA violation to me.
